What happened?
Science in action! For four weeks this spring 96 observers submitted 8257 observations in the 2025 Great Lakes BioBlitz! This community science effort engaged educators, students, families, youth groups, and the general public in recording 1716 species within the Great Lakes Basin.
This bioblitz data was collected using the iNaturalist app. The accumulating data helps us better understand biodiversity, land, and water connections over time, including research and conservation efforts.

1716 species were observed in the Great Lakes basin!
Minnesota Sea Grant and Wisconsin Sea Grant teamed up to kick off the 2025 Great Lakes BioBlitz with a 40-minute recorded webinar. You can watch it anytime to learn about observing nature from scientist Clinton Dexter-Neinhaus, head naturalist at Sax-Zim Bog. Learn from Clinton how he uses iNaturalist for research and gain tips about data collection…plus meet ‘Pie’ the Blanding’s turtle from the Great Lakes Aquarium!
