Application Deadline: 2026 Lake Huron Place-Based Stewardship Education Summer Institute (7/20-22)

May 22
2026 Summer Institute promotion flyer features three educators using a dip net to sample macroinvertebrates

Join the 2026 Lake Huron Place-Based Stewardship Education Summer Institute in Alpena, MI for 2.5 days of immersed learning, fellowship, and project planning. This year we will also be focusing on fisheries science and watershed exploration with lessons and activities that will support those topics. Teacher participants will explore different place-based education and Great Lakes literacy-focused lessons and be “students” as lessons are modelled at various field locations. Each participant will be able to connect with relevant community partners and receive coaching and time to plan their place-based stewardship education project. As a prerequisite to the Institute, all educators will be required to take our new virtual Intro to PBSE course (estimated ~6-8 hours of SCECH eligible asynchronous work). Learn more and apply here by 5/22.

What: This 2.5-day workshop is designed for educators to explore place-based stewardship education (PBSE), Great Lakes literacy, and watershed science. Educators leave with a built out stewardship project plan, a $500 project stipend, SCECHs, and new and/or stronger relationships with partners and educators.

Who: Formal and nonformal educators with a priority will be given to applicants from the Lake Huron watershed. Educators from the same school who apply in teams will be given greater consideration, particularly teams bringing on educators that are new to place-based stewardship education.

When: July 20-22, 2026

Registration Deadline: May 22, 2026

Where: Alpena & Presque Isle, MI (lodging and most meals provided)
