Deadline: Thunder Bay International Film Festival Student Shorts Film Competition

SHOW WHAT THE GREAT LAKES MEAN TO YOU THROUGH A STUDENT SHORT!

Each year, the Student Shorts Film Competition is an exciting part of Thunder Bay International Film Festival (TBIFF)! Middle and High School students (6th-12th grade) are eligible to enter individually or as a team, and there is no entry fee for the competition. Film “shorts” submissions will open September 15th with a submission deadline of December 15th. The film should focus on Great Lakes related content.

  • What: Student film competition where youth can create stories about the Great Lakes
    • Cash prizes are awarded to First, Second, and Third Place films. 
  • When: Film “shorts” submissions are open from September 15 to December 15, 2026
  • Where: Student filmmakers can come from anywhere in the United States.
    • Selected student films will be featured at the TBIFF Student Shorts Film Competition on January 23, 2027 from 3-4pm at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center in Alpena, MI. Student filmmakers do not need to attend this showcase to submit a film.
  • Who: Middle and High School students (6th-12th grade) are eligible to enter individually or as a team
  • Cost: No cost to submit a film to the competition
